Awareness- Education - Advocacy

About GCSOW

In 1980, the City of Gainesville Commission approved the establishment of the Gainesville Commission on the Status of Women.  In 1994, after concerns over what some Commissioners viewed as controversial actions by the GCOSW, including providing condoms for a health fair, the City of Gainesville severed ties with GCOSW.  Those involved with GCOSW’s cause realized, however, that Gainesville was still in need of an organization to advocate for the needs of women and girls in our community.  GCOSW incorporated as a not-for-profit organization and continues to this day to work towards its mission.

Mission

To seek for every woman and girl dignity and opportunities equal to her potential, respecting diversity in ability, race, color, sexual orientation, gender identity, creed, and age.

Committees

The GCOSW and its members are always looking for new energy so that we can continue our efforts.  Much of the Commission’s work is done within its committees.  As a non-profit organization, we rely on the efforts and funding of community volunteers.

The Commission offers mini-grants to support innovative programs and projects that address the needs of women and girls in our community.  The committee provides supplemental or small project funds to organizations facilitating girls’ and women’s empowerment.  Projects may take the form of education, awareness, or activism.  Non-profit and educational organizations are eligible to apply.
